What moves by rail
Cost-efficient long-haul across Indian rail freight corridors. Container and bulk movement.
Rail is the mode to reach for when the distance is long, the volume is real and the delivery date has some give in it. Per tonne-kilometre it undercuts road on long domestic hauls and emits substantially less doing it, at the cost of a fixed schedule and terminals rather than doors — which is why almost every rail movement is quoted with a road leg at one or both ends.
- LONG HAULLong-haul domestic corridors where road transit stops being competitive.
- CONTAINERContainerised freight moving inland from a port, or out to one.
- BULKBulk and heavy commodities — metals, chemicals, minerals, agricultural volume.
- RECURRING LANESRecurring lanes where a slower, cheaper, lower-emission mode can absorb the transit time.
What you choose on a rail quote
Rail has no sub-service to pick, so the form is shorter than the ocean or air equivalent. What it needs is the cargo and the two ends of the journey.
- Package lines with dimensions, weight and stackability, or the container detail if the movement is containerised.
- Service level:express or standard.
- Full pickup and delivery addresses — the road legs that get the freight to and from the terminal are quoted as part of the movement.
- A preferred pickup date, and a delivery date if you are working to one.
- Hazardous and temperature-controlled declarations where they apply.
- An Incoterm and a customs-clearance party if the movement crosses a border.

Common questions
- When is rail freight cheaper than road in India?
- Generally on long domestic hauls with enough volume to fill the movement, where the schedule can absorb a fixed departure and the terminal-to-door legs at each end. On short and mid-range lanes, road usually wins once you count the double handling. Submit the same cargo as both a rail and a road quote and compare what comes back — that is the only answer specific to your lane.
- Does a rail quote include pickup and delivery?
- Yes. The quote form asks for a full pickup address and a full delivery address, not terminal names, so the road legs at either end are part of what gets priced. If you only want the terminal-to-terminal leg, say so in the instructions field.
- Can rail carry containers, or only bulk?
- Both. Indian rail freight corridors carry containerised traffic and bulk commodity movement, and the quote form takes either — container detail for a containerised movement, package lines for everything else.
- Is rail freight lower emission than road?
- Per tonne-kilometre, materially so — it is the main reason rail is worth the schedule constraint on a long haul. TFFx does not publish a per-shipment emissions figure today, so treat that as a directional statement about the mode rather than a number attached to your consignment.
